For all the insults it gets, "American Idol" is still the most popular television show in America, for seven years running. Yes, it's a direct descendant of the variety shows of the 60s and 70s. So what? It's got singing, stars, humiliation, and victory. And if you don't like it, it's at least fun to hate it.

Few high-school dramas make it past four years. Fortunately for "One Tree Hill," the producers jumped forward four years to have the rapidly-aging actors take over their characters in new, more mature roles. Clever: And successful ratings-wise, too.

Consensus has it that "Eli Stone" is coming back to ABC, though I can't understand why. "October Road" is dead. Sources disagree on "Women's Murder Club," though given the title... CBS is expected to bring back "The Unit." Still More...

The other networks are announcing their falls schedules this week. NBC shot their wad a few weeks ago, but they're still trying to get their share of press today with the Jimmy Fallon announcement and the Ryan Seacrest announcement. More...
