I remember the first time I saw London. I was twenty-one. I walked out of Paddington Station into a city bigger than any I had ever seen. It was a gray, cold rainy afternoon.
I loved the place immediately.
I did the typical touristy things. I visited Westminster Abbey and went book shopping on Charing Cross Road, but mostly I just walked around. I had read about this city my entire life. I could hardly believe I was finally there.
I’ve been back a few times since, and the city only gets better. I love
London not just for all there is to see—one of the world’s finest art galleries, one of the first and greatest modern museums, world-renowned theater—but also to savor the fantastic, sprawling vastness of the place. Over 7 million people speaking more than 300 languages call London home.
In our Top 10 London sources, Here I’ve collected voices that reflect the pleasures, problems and variety of life in the city, including that of an expatriate Nigerian poet and a Labour councillour in Southwark. We've also got feeds on London news and nightlife. A poignant online journal begun in the aftermath of the 7/7 bombings provides a perspective on British politics, and the musings of an amiable crank keeps us abreast of events such as National Cheese on Toast Day. Perhaps you came to this site because of an interest in London’s storied past: Shakespeare, Bloomsbury, the Blitz. You’ll stay because its present is even more compelling.

Sexual intercourse may have begun, per Larkin, in 1963, but one London centenarian is defying that clammy logic: Eric Woodward, who dispenses advice on love, ladies, and life to a new generation in the pages of FHM magazine, has just celebrated his 101st birthday.

Of all the problems Heathrow's colicky baby T5 has been having in its first few months, we've mostly heard about masses of lost baggage and inconveniently cancelled flights. London is especially lovely in the summer months, so it comes as no surprise that visitors would want to come and bask in the capital’s loveliness while the sun is [usually] shining and the weather is [generally] mild. And the livin’ is easy: the weather’s been divine, and summer is here at last. There is the compulsion to spend every possible moment outdoors (Pimms preferably in hand), as it’s London after all and you never know when the good meteorological fortune will end. To that end, welcome to an al-fresco themed London On The...

Dear Uncle Pepe,
Thank you so much for sending your Gourmet Grazing Box! It arrived just in time for this past sunny weekend, resulting in a couple of brilliant picnics as well as a few notably yummy nibble sessions. In fact, there were so many goodies in the box that some morsels are still left to sift through.

When bands get hyped beyond normality they can become pretty annoying, particularly if like New Young Pony Club you don't really have anything to back it up. The Ting Tings are the latest example of mega hypedom. From Salford, they formed previously hyped but failed band Dear Eskiimo before deciding to start afresh and...
